Family Bike Ride

Friday, March 26th, 2010

We have had several beautiful spring days here lately.  The warm weather and bright sun seem to draw us outside, even if nothing more than to sit on the front porch and let Mikayla crawl around on the ground.  We recently got a bike trailer stroller from some good friends and decided to break it in.  Please ignore the fact that none of us are wearing helmets, it was a quick ride around the block.  It was a great way to spend the sunny afternoon with my family.

She’s perfect…

Monday, February 1st, 2010

…even the doctor agrees! We already knew that she was perfect, but Dr. F. confirmed it this morning at her nine month check up.  Those were his words…"she’s perfect"!  Here are her nine month stats:

Height – 27 inches, up 7 inches from birth.  Pops, I think we have a ball player on our hands.  She has always been in the "above average" category for height.

Weight – 17lbs 5oz, up almost 10 pounds from birth (she was 7lbs 7oz in the hospital).  This has been an up and down battle with us, but she is right at the 25th percentile.  Dr. F. says that is great, so we will take it!

Head – 43.5cm…we are moving on up.  Her head has actually just made it on the average growth curve, she has always been below average in this category.

MLK has grown so much in these past nine months, I can’t believe she is only 3 months away from her first birthday!  She has accomplished so much.  Here are a few of her latest tricks.

  1. MLK can crawl.  If you have followed this blog at all you already knew that, but she is really moving these days.  All over the place.
  2. Pulling up.  Again, she has been doing this for some time now, but has really perfected it in the last few weeks.
  3. Standing on her own for around 20 seconds.  It won’t be long now before she is walking.
  4. Feeding herself.  She actually prefers this method much more than us feeding her.  She uses her hands (we will work on manners later) and makes a big mess, but she is doing great.
  5. One tooth and one more on the way.  This has caused quite the battle at night time, but we are managing.
  6. Mimicking.  She is at a really fun age right now because she tries to do everything we do.  If we click our tongue, she attempts to click hers.  If we wave our arms around, she will do the same.  It is so cute!

Snow Day – In case you didn’t get the memo, BG got a ton of snow this past weekend.  A ton for us anyway.  We got between 6 and 8 inches.  It was beautiful.  MLK wasn’t a huge fan of the snow, but really all she can do at this point is sit in it.  Maybe next year.  Here are a few pictures from our snow adventures, but please excuse her "snow suit".  It is a Snoopy Halloween costume and it was the warmest thing we could find for her.  She showed a little resemblance to Randy from A Christmas Story, but at least she was warm!

MLK Update

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Day, Mikayla’s namesake.  Check back later for pictures and comments about this and how we celebrated.  But for tonight, here are some recent pictures of our little MLK.

If you recall this post, you will be able to see how much MLK has really grown in 8.5 months.

2010-January 053

Mom got MLK this little zebra at a consignment sale, and while she isn’t quite ready to ride on her own, she is enjoying it.  Even Shiloh wanted in on the action! 2010-January 066   2010-January 068 2010-January 070

MLK was very eager to help me fold and put away the laundry yesterday.  She was a great helper!

Fun Mikayla Pictures

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Mikayla is now 8+ months old, crawling, pulling up and one tooth in her mouth.  Here are some recent pictures of my little lady.

Here she is sporting a new outfit from her Great Aunt Dawn while lounging in her bean bag from Aunt Christa, Uncle Kris, and Cousins Tyson and Tanner.  She loves it!

2010-January 022 2010-January 024

Ben took this photo the other day.  Napping has become somewhat non-existent in the last week.  She has never been a great napper (unlike her mommy, I can nap with the best of them), but in the past week she has refused to lay down for a morning nap.  If we can manage to get her down, she just sits in the crib and plays or cries.  We are lucky if she sleeps for 15-20 minutes.  The other morning she fell asleep while drinking her bottle, so Ben laid her in the floor.  This is what she looked like.

2010-January 052

Bath Time Fun!  Mikayla has gotten to where she really enjoys playing in the tub.  She likes to crawl around a lot, so this presents some problems, but we are managing.  She really likes to chew on her Rubber Ducky that determines the proper temperature of the water.

2010-January 046 2010-January 045

Mikayla’s hair is at a funny stage right now.  She basically has two layers.  A long dark layer that she was born with and has grown for 8 months and then a bottom light layer that is just starting to come in.  It almost looks like she has a comb over because of the differences.  Ben thinks we should cut it, I am voting no.  I mean if we cut it, we can no longer give her funny hair dos like the one below during bath time!

A Year In Review

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I am stealing this idea from my friend Dave.  I loved his post so much and thought it gave a good account for the year 2009.  What better way to ring in the new year than with a list of fun memories and pictures from the past.  Without further ado:

January – 100th day of school…Call me crazy, but I think this is one of my favorite days of school, right behind KY Derby week and Dr. Seuss week!  The kids all dress up like they are 100 and we do activities all day that revolve around the number 100.  It is crazy fun.

Christmas - New Year 098 Christmas - New Year 100

February – My birthday, what else!!  I also did a fun art project for the nursery with an old student, T-, who is kind of like an adopted son for us.

Week 32 and birthday flowers 011random 009

March – 10 years of bliss (combined dating and married) with my wonderful husband!  He surprised me with 10 gerbera daisies (my favorite), throughout the day and even a surprise lunch.  He also put together a photo album, with a picture for each year we have been together.  There was also a sweet visit from Catherine mixed in there.  We had fun just hanging out, driving around forever trying to find a place to get a pedicure, and then painting pottery.  It was a great last hurrah before Mikayla was born!

April – The birth of my dear sweet Mikayla…enough said!

Mikayla 053Mikayla 011_MG_0289_ed

May – Ben graduated from seminary…Hallelujah!  Three years of no social life, lonely nights on the couch (me) and endless hours of studying (him) were officially over.  I don’t know who was more excited, me or him?

grad june 008

June – Lots of mini road trips and first meetings for Mikayla.  We traveled to Somerset where she met her great grandparents and adopted grandma (Cindy Kerr).  Then on to Mayfield, Kentucky to meet Mignon, another great grandmother.  Finally, a trip to Kentucky Lake to meet the extended Kickert clan (great Aunts and Uncles and second cousins).  It was an exhausting month, but a lot of fun!  She also met T- and his brother, M- (see February for more information on these two)!

July – I finished up my “internship” at the Kelly Autism Program which meant I finished my Rank I (no more school for me)…Can I get another Hallelujah? Sorry no pictures of this for the month, but here is one of Mikayla!  This is her classic pouty face!

August – Adventures in Baking and back to school.  I spent a lot of time in August cooking. Homemade pizza, salsa, okra stew, stuffed jalapenos, and a first attempt at sushi just to name a few.  It was hard to leave Mikayla at the beginning of August and head back to school but we managed.  Ben did such a good job of taking care of her, even if he did try to cook her!

September – September was a slow month for me.  I worked and when I wasn’t working I was spending time with my family.  I guess you could say the most exciting thing about the month was developing my love for BabyLegs.  Hey, I told you it was a slow month!

2009-10-13 legwarmers 002

October – Smokey Mountain fun with the Altmaiers and celebrating my five year wedding anniversary with Ben.  I have said it before, and I will say it again, these are some of the best friends a girl could ask for.  We have known them for so long and it never fails, with each visit, we just pick right up where we left off.  There is no awkwardness at all.  We could go weeks without communicating and then jump right back in when we do.  They are our go to couple when having a marital dispute and more like family than friends!  Seriously, it doesn’t get much better!  This is perhaps one of my favorite months of the past year.  Fall + Great Friends + Five years of wedded bliss = A great month!

November – Another slow month, not much to report besides Thanksgiving.  We had a great time visiting with both sides of the family and ate until we could eat no more.

December – My favorite thing about December was starting new traditions with my little family.  We decorated the tree, opened stockings, drank hot cocoa, took pictures, ate some Chinese, and enjoyed some wine.  It was a great way to end the year.  Oh and those yummy cinnamon rolls!

I hope that 2010 brings as much fun, excitement and joy as 2009 did!  Happy New Years everyone.

Mikayla and Chase

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

While in Chicago for Ben’s grandpa’s funeral we got to meet and hang out with Chase, Mikayla’s third cousin.  Here are some pictures.  Keep in mind that Chase is two weeks older…

Mikayla wasn't too thrilled with him at first.

Random Thoughts

Monday, October 5th, 2009

My fall break started Friday.  So far, I have done nothing productive, but had some much needed lazy time with my husband, daughter and dog.  Tomorrow my sis, nephews and mom are coming in town to hang out for the day.  Because my car died on the way home to Tanner’s birthday party I did not make it.  So, my loving sister has agreed to throw a mock birthday party on Wednesday so I can be there to celebrate.  Thursday we meet up with some dear friends for a relaxing time in the Smokies.  Next Tuesday I have set aside to plan with my team teacher and make baby food.  My fall break is turning out to be pretty busy, but I am excited about each and every aspect of it.

~~~~
Tonight I cooked…for the first time in forever it seems like.   I made Cheesy Chicken and Broccoli Rice from Kraft Foods.  (Side note – I love this magazine, if you don’t subscribe you should!)  Go here for the recipe.  It was simple and delicious.  The only change I made was to season the chicken (black pepper and salt) and add some pepper and seasoned salt to the final product.  I served with some Sister Schubert Yeast Rolls.
In preparation for our big trip, I made some Chocolate Chip Cookies.  The trick to make them extra delicious is to use dark chocolate chips and to chop them up so that they are mini and some are shaved.  I just stick them in the food processor and chop away.  This evenly distributes the chocolate into every bite of the cookie.  The one thing I haven’t mastered yet is to make my cookies fluffy.  Mine always end up flat.  In high school, Mrs. Tuttle always made the best chocolate chip cookies.  They were the perfect blend of crunchy, cakey and gooey.  I hope to one day cook cookies as good as hers.  Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong or what I can do to achieve this perfect blend?
~~~~

In case you didn’t read Ben’s post, the Camry is dead.  This was my first car.  In highschool my sister and I shared an Acura Legend.  Technically, this was my first car, but because we shared it and she started driving first it never felt like my car.  I only felt like I borrowed it from her when driving.  The Camry was my car.  I helped by it, I was the sole driver, I loved that car.  Now I must say goodbye to a dear friend.  Ben doesn’t understand why this is so hard for me, and really I don’t either.  It is like parting with a good friend I suppose.  But the difference is, I won’t be seeing it later, it is a for real goodbye.  Has anyone else felt this or am I really crazy?

This post is very scattered, but that is my life in a nutshell at the current moment!

Tanner Turns One

Friday, September 25th, 2009

A year ago my sister and I were both pregnant.  She was very pregnant with her second child and I was just beginning my first pregnancy.  Today my little (well not so little any more) nephew turns one.  He is such a big boy and so full of life.  I hope when Mikayla turns one she is just as full of life as Tanner!  My sister is throwing a “Ball Themed” Birthday Party tomorrow because he loves balls so much.  There will be a ball pit, round pumpkins for kids to paint and food in the shape of balls or circles (i.e. meatballs, circle sandwiches, grapes, melon balls, etc).

Happy Birthday little guy!  I will see you at your “Ball Themed” Birthday Party tomorrow!

Family Pictures

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I made a quick trip to Somerset this week to see a dear friend from high school.  While I was home I got to spend some time with my family.  I decided it would be a good idea to try and get the three grandkids (Mikayla and my sisters boys, Tyson and Tanner) to take a picture.  Here is what we ended up with…maybe we need the help of a professional!

Tyson had a hard time staying still and poor Mikayla still can't sit up on her own!

This was a good one of the boys, but Mikayla fell over!

So we didn’t end up with any good pictures, but at least we had fun!  What is the trick to getting three kids ages 2 and under to sit still long enough for a portrait??

10 Random Facts

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Today’s Top Ten List is 10 Random Facts.  By the end of this post you will probably know more random facts about me than you bargained for.  Some of you may know some of these, but hopefully you will learn something new about me.  Ready or not, here we go!

  1. Evens OCD – Most people are semi-aware of this one.  Everything I do has to be in evens.  This was worse in college, but still exists today.  When I eat, I eat two of everything and if I am only eating one (like a piece of chicken) I take an even number of bites.  I don’t even realize I am doing this half the time.  If I touch something, I have to touch it twice (for the most part).  It is an obsession I know, but I manage it!  I mean in some way we all have our little OCDs
  2. Alarm clock – There are only certain numbers I can set my alarm clock to.  I can’t really explain the madness, it is just that way.  Obviously odd times are out (see Random Fact Number 1).  Then when it comes to even certain numbers are out as well.  Times ending in zeros and eights never get set (i.e 3:00 or 3:08).  That leaves 2, 4, and 6 (i.e. 4:06 or 4:14).  Six is by far the most common time to set my alarm clock, but two and four are acceptable as well!
  3. Cutting split ends – This was a favorite pasttime in college.  When I got bored in class I would search my hair for split ends and cut them or break them apart.  I ran a contest against myself to see how big of a split I could find!  I think my biggest split was 10 on the same hair.  Again, I know it is strange, but this list is Ten Random Facts.
  4. Picking things (scabs, scalp, sunburn, you name it) – Who doesn’t like to pick scaps and sunburns?  Oh wait, is that just me?  As a child my sister and I would take turns putting sand in each others hair so we could pick it out.  It was a challenge to find all the grains of sand.  Even today I love to pick at things.  Just ask Ben!  I have to restrain myself from picking at the scratches Mikayla has made from her fingernails!
  5. Nostril sizes – This is probably Ben’s favorite flaw to pick out on me.  My nostrils are two different sizes.  One is short and fat and the other long and skinny.  If he hasn’t already shown you, next time you are with us, just ask him about it.  I think it comes from all the years of him picking my nose (ask anyone we hung out with in highschool and they can explain), but I am not sure!
  6. Birthmark – This one is a little personal, but hey we are all friends!  My birthmark is located on my bottom.  I think Mikayla has one on her eye (we can’t tell if it is going to stick around or not), she is much luckier than me!
  7. Name sake – I was named after my Great Aunt Ann Elizabeth.  My parents named me Elizabeth Ann.  My daughter is named after Martin Luther King, Jr.  Both are pretty cool if you ask me.
  8. Nephews – I have two nephews that I adore!  I don’t get to see them very often, but when I do it is priceless.  Tyson, or T-bone as some call him, is two and full of energy.  He makes me laugh.  He is talking up a storm these days too.Tanner, on the hand, is almost one and lazy!  He isn’t really lazy, he just seems it compared to his big brother.  Tanner just learned to crawl.  I can’t wait to see it!  My sister has her hands full!
  9. Great Grandparents – When I was born I had six great grandparents that were living.  I only really knew four of them, but thought this was a fun fact.  Sadly, I have since lost all of these great grandparents.  I spent many days with my Great Granny Carew.  Lillian was her first name and we used it for our daughters middle name.  Granny Carew would make us grilled cheese sandwiches when we came to visit.  She would also make yellow cake with homemade chocolate syrup for us to enjoy.  These are still two favorites of mine today.  People think I am funny when I make a yellow cake and put chocolate syrup on it instead of icing, but this is the way that Granny Carew used to make it!  My Great Granny Clark (fondly known as Leila Belle) was a collector.  Two of her most famous collections were corn husk dolls and a stuffed doll (I am not sure of the exact name of these).  Both of these collections were passed down to grandkids and great grandkids when she passed away.  Mikayla has 7 great grandparents alive today!
  10. Fingernail wart – This last fact is really random, but I am running out of ideas!  I have a massive wart under my ring finger on my right hand.  I have tried to put wart remover on it to get rid of it, but it always seems to come back.  I have had warts in some capacity forever it seems like, I actually think I passed this on to my loving husband unfortunately.  In high school I had a planters wart that was so bad I had to have it dug out by a dermatologist.  I couldn’t condition for basketball (bummer 😉 ) and had to walk around with socks on one foot and bandages on the other.  It was attractive!

Well, that ends my ten random facts.  How many did you already know?  Is there anyone besides my husband who knew them all?  What about you, what are some random facts about yourself?

Here is a random family photo to go along with my Ten Random Facts
