Toddler School–Letter N

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

We have spent the last two weeks working on the Letter N.  We have been off and on with school, but trying to integrate it into our play more the last two weeks.  Here are a few of the activities that we sat down to complete together.

Childcare Pictures 2, Letter N 001

We made a hat out of a newspaper.  She got a little confused though because she kept thinking that hat started with N and not newspaper!

Childcare Pictures 2, Letter N 003

So we cut up some newspaper into squares and then glued onto the letter N to help reinforce this.

Childcare Pictures 2, Letter N 008

We found some nests in some trees and made a letter N nest.  Then we took her number stickers and stuck on the letter N.  I also tried to get her to identify which number was which, but she wasn’t a big fan of this game!

Letter N 019

We read and talked about the story of Noah and the Ark, then made our own ark out of paper plates.  We painted (she painted the ark and I did the rainbow) and then cut the ark plate in half and stapled on top.  Then we looked through magazines for pictures of animals and cut them out to stick in our ark.  There weren’t two of every animal, but she still got the idea I think.

Letter N 002

For her birthday Sister Barbara and Sister Diane got her a really cool wooden ark and animal set, so we played with it a lot this week!  Such a fun gift and I love how it worked into our learning time the last two weeks!

Letter N 008

We painted with noodles too!  At first it started out really clean and she just dipped the noodles onto the paint and gently placed them on her paper…

Letter N 010

But then it got a a little messy when she decided she needed paint directly in the noodles and squished them all up together!

Letter N 018

What true artist can’t multi-task.  Here she is eating her noodles and painting with them at the same time!  Too funny!

We move onto the Letter O next.  I am excited about learning all about owls and octopus!

Toddler School–Letter K

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Since we skipped Letter K accidentally, we back tracked and made it up last week.  Here are some of our K activities.

Letter K and birthday countdown 009

This is not a K specific activity, but I try to throw in whole alphabet activities whenever I can.  This was originally intended as an interactive letter line to hang on the wall, but I never got around to hanging it so we turned it into a game.  On each clothespin is a sticker of a letter.  She had to match the lettered clothespin to the correct letter card.  Both phonics and fine motor practice in this game.  She loved it so much I think we ended up laying it three times this day!

Letter K and birthday countdown 011

We made a letter K king by gluing a king crown on top an then of course she had to have her very own king crown!

Letter K and birthday countdown 012

She has really love typing letters lately and has recently asked for me to spell certain words for her to type.  As you can see, her number one is her friend Lylah’s name!

Letter K and birthday countdown 017

This is a color by number picture I made of a kite and the sun.  She did great at finding the right number and coloring it, but she still hasn’t caught on to color the whole area and not just the number.

Letter K and birthday countdown 020

Letter K kite picture.

Letter K and birthday countdown 022

Kite with her last name (which also starts with a K) down the string.

Letter K and birthday countdown 030

Kangaroo letter game.  I drew out a kangaroo and cut up different letter cards.  She had to look at the letter cards and fill his pouch with only the letter K.

We also glued kernels of corn onto the letter K, but I didn’t get a picture.  We did some counting with the kernels as well.  We move on to the letter N next since we did M a few months back!

Toddler School–Letter L

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

This past week we learned all about the Letter L.  After a few days of studying, I realized I completely skipped the Letter K!  Oops!  I guess we will make that one up next week!  Here are some of our L activities.

Blyde River Canyon 001

We collected leaves and then did some leave rubbings.  She had a hard time with this because she is still not pressing down very hard when she writes.

Blyde River Canyon 004

Then we painted with leaves!

Blyde River Canyon 005

She had some leftover paint, so we practiced writing the Letter L using our fingers.

Blyde River Canyon 006

Handprint lion!

Blyde River Canyon 008

Bead balancing – I made a mound of clay and stuck an uncooked spaghetti noodle in it and then she slid on the beans.  Great fine motor practice!

Blyde River Canyon 011

While she was working, I made a lady bug out of the leftover clay.

Blyde River Canyon 012

A special lion lunch.  I served with a PB sandwich!

Blyde River Canyon 015

Letter L lion

Blyde River Canyon 016

Hand and footprint lobster.  I goofed and put her footprint upside down, but you get the idea!

More letter L, fire pit 005

Ladybug fun.  We made the paper plate lady bug and then rolled dice to see how many spots to put on him.  When we were finished we just glued the spots on.  This would be easy to adapt to addition by rolling a dice for each side, laying the spots on both sides and then counting them all together.  Then we made a Letter L ladybug by coloring an L red and then gluing on spots.

More letter L, fire pit 006

Since Mikayla’s middle name starts with an L, I decided to work on spelling it this week.  So, I made some letter cards and put them on binder clips upside down and had her put them in order.  We will continue to work on her middle name in weeks to come.

Next week we will move backwards to the letter K, although I am still struggling with activities for this one…

Toddler School–Letter J

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

Mikayla got a stomach bug this week, so Toddler School was hit or miss.  We completed several activities at the beginning of the week, but the end of the week was a different story.  She liked learning about the Letter J, but I think mostly because she got to eat jelly beans!

Letter J 005

She practiced coloring and staying in the lines by coloring some color coded jelly beans.  She did pretty good with this.  As you can see we are still working on correct gripping of pencils and crayons.  She hates holding them the right way!

Letter J 012

We sorted jelly beans by colors.

Letter J 017

Then we graphed them.  First I had her lay them beside the right color, one per square.  Then we took one off at a time and colored that square the correct color.  Then of course we had to eat one of each color.

Letter J 023

I taught her the Nursery Rhyme Jack and Jill.  She loved this!  I drew them onto toilet paper tubes (please don’t judge my artistic abilities) and then she colored them.  We used them as we recited the Nursery Rhyme.  She took these guys with us everywhere we went for the rest of the week.  We also used Jack to act out Jack and the Candlestick.

Letter J 027

We also practiced fetching a pail of water.

Letter J 031

Then we poured the water into the pan.

Letter J 034

We made a jelly fish by cutting a paper plate in half, coloring it and tying ribbon as the tentacles.

I had also planned on doing some more jelly fish stuff, jar activities and Jack and the Beanstalk, but whens he got sick we didn’t get to most of them.  I may try to throw them in next week, but we will see.  I also think I will try and do some Easter activities next week, along with our next letter.  Anyone have any good suggestions for fun activities?

Toddler School–Letter I

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Letter I was a tough one for me to come up with ideas for.  I managed to come up with a few that I think were fun (and somewhat creative).  So, without further ado:

Letter I 001

I made another puzzle from a coloring book page for the Letter I .  She had fun putting together her ice cream cone!

Letter I 002

My mom had sent some insect stickers so we used these to make the Letter I.

Letter I 005

She also sent some of those "Grow-A-Capsules" in the shapes of bugs, but we called them insects.  She enjoyed watching the capsules grow into different insects.

Letter I 006

Since she likes to stamp so much, I wrote out some "I" word and had her stamp the correct letters on top.

Letter I 007

Then we rolled the dice and counted out that many insects.

Letter I 008

She glued sprinkles on top of the numbers according to the number on each cone.

Letter I 009

At the store last week I found some insect gummies so we sorted these by colors and then by insects.  Of course we ate some too!

Letter I 011

She has gotten really good at writing the letter I.  Although she will sometimes write an H instead.

Letter I 014

I made some colored ice cubes with food coloring and let her use them to paint with.  After painting the I, she then went on to paint 10 other pages!  This kid loves painting!

Letter I 015

I broke back out our Ice cream letter matching game this week.  It had been awhile since she played it.

Letter I 016

Then of course we made ice cream.  I chose to make the individual ice cream in a bag version.  She enjoyed it for the first minute and then got tired of shaking it and I had to finish.

Letter I 018

And of course she had to eat some as well!

Next week we will move on to the Letter J.  Stay tuned!

Miscellaneous Seuss Activities

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Have I mentioned before how much I love Dr. Seuss?  Well if not, I LOVE DR. SEUSS!  I think he is an extremely creative writer that engages his reader and his characters are super creative!  When I taught Kindergarten we always did a two week Dr. Seuss unit and read as many of his books as we could.  Mikayla has always enjoyed Dr. Seuss, which is why we have spent the last two weeks "studying" his books during our Toddler School time.  You can read about some of our past activities here, here, here and here.  These are just some of the activities that didn’t make it into any of the other posts because they weren’t geared towards any specific book, but just Dr. Seuss as a whole!

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 002

I colored a Thing 1 picture, cut into strips, numbered the strips and she had a fun puzzle to work.  She really enjoyed this and it was easy, so I think we will be doing more of these in the future!

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 006

I placed some Dr. Seuss stickers onto strips of paper and she cut in between the stickers for some fun cutting practice.

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 008

Since she LOVES stickers so much I let her take the extra stickers and place on a quick drawing of the words Dr. Seuss and a Cat Hat.

random stuff 019

I made a color by number that revealed the Cat’s Hat.  She did a great job of coloring the numbers to correct color, but she struggled with coloring in the whole area.  Another easy project we can replicate for future activities!

Shape of me, ABCs 016

Roll An Action Game.  First, I made a dice with six different actions (i.e. clap, hop, etc.)  Then, I laid out some Dr. Seuss number flash cards on the floor. She chose one, rolled the action dice and then completed the action the same number of times as her number card.  She is still not great with number recognition if anyone has any fun activities.

Toddler School–Dr. Seuss Cats and Fish

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

For our final installment of Dr. Seuss fun we focused on a couple of my favorite books:  One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Cat in the Hat, and Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

After reading the book I had Mikayla put the correct number for fish in each numbered fish bowl.  I had planned to have her paint or stamp them, but stickers were easier on this particular day.  If you look closely at the picture on the right you will see a glimpse of our Horton made from a toilet paper tube.

More Seussian fun 001

Cat in the Hat

We made the obligatory Thing 1 and Thing 2 craft by painting our hands.  I still want to play a balancing game with her where she tries to balance objects like Cat in the Hat, but we managed to run out of time again!

More Seussian fun 011

Cat in the Hat Comes Back

We made a Cat Hat with the letters of her name.  She liked it so much, we had to make hats for some of her princesses out of strips of paper and toilet paper tubes.  Pictures are terrible, but you get the idea!

I made some finger puppets today while she was napping, but they did not turn out as planned.  The cat is not black because I didn’t have black pipe cleaners.  And the noses on Thing 1 and Thing 2 are a little large, but oh well.  I still think Mikayla will have fun with them!

I had also planned to do some stuff with The Foot Book, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.  If we do, I will post about it later.

Toddler School–Horton and Hop on Pop

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

We have continued our Dr. Seuss study this week with a few more popular titles:  Horton Hears a Who, Horton Hatches An Egg, Hop On Pop and There’s a Wocket in My Pocket.  Here are our activities:

Horton Hears a Who

We began by reading the book and then making a clover with a speck.  She is still playing with the clover and is amazed the speck never falls off!  I didn’t have any glitter this year which I usually use for my speck, so I just put a drop of hot glue and it works great (even easier than the glitter).  Then we grabbed Horton and watched the movie.  Please note that my daughters choice of snacks for the movie watching were plain noodles.  Too funny!

Horton 001

Horton Hatches An Egg

She was a little disappointed after this reading, because there wasn’t a movie to watch.  She thought there should be!  We settled for making a Horton character out of a painted toilet paper tube and some foam.  I did not manage to get a picture of this, but I promise it was cute!

Hop On Pop

We read the book and then got out some bubble wrap for her to Hop on Pop(s).  She had a blast and kept popping for several minutes!

More Seussian fun 003

There’s a Wocket In My Pocket

This was a last minute addition to our study because we found it for pretty cheap in Jo-burg last weekend.  We read the book and then played a game.  To play I put six items on a cookie sheet.  Then I had her close her eyes and removed one object to put in my pocket.  When she opened her eyes she had to guess which object was missing.  She did great at this game and we played several times back and forth.  Eventually she even started adding more items while my eyes were closed…clever girl!

More Seussian fun 002

I have just a few more activities up my sleeves so stay tuned!

Toddler School–More Dr. Seuss

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

For this installment of Toddler School we will focus on two more Dr. Seuss books:  The Shape of Me and Other Stuff and Dr. Seuss’s ABCs.  Like before, we read the book and then completed the activities.

The Shape of Me and Other Stuff

Shape of me, ABCs 002

We made shape noodles.  She chose four of her favorite shapes and I drew them on some paper.  Then she traced them with white glue and glued cooked noodles on top.  She kept talking about a noodle eating poodle while doing this (from Fox in Socks) and she insisted on wearing her silly socks!

Shape of me, ABCs 005

Then we took side walk chalk and made the shape of stuff by tracing them.  In this picture you can see her tracing her baby doll.

Dr. Seuss’s ABCs

Shape of me, ABCs 018

We made letters in salt.  We also just played with the salt!

Shape of me, ABCs 021

We worked our Dr. Seuss ABC puzzle.  We also went on a letter hunt around the house.  She wasn’t really into this so I didn’t get any pictures.

Toddler School–Green Eggs and Ham / Fox in Socks

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Last week was Dr. Seuss’s birthday and since we were gone and/or busy for most of the week we decided to push back our Dr. Seuss fun to this week and next.  I have created (or stolen ideas from others) various activities to correspond with each of the Dr. Seuss books we have.  We read the books and then complete the activities.  Rather than posting about them all in one large post, I decided to break them down.  This post will be about Green Eggs and Ham and Fox in Socks.

Green Eggs and Ham

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 005

We colored shapes green and then glued them onto the matching eggs to make Green Egg Shapes!

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 009

Then we made a green eggs and ham snack.  We started by pairing together two pretzel sticks (ham) and then choosing some green jelly beans from a pile.

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 010

Then we melted some white chocolate and put "globs" of it on the sticks to represent the egg whites.  She then placed the green jelly bean on top as the center of the green eggs.

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 018

Next up our Green Eggshell Art.  I saved the egg shells from last week’s Dr. Seuss dinner, washed them good and placed them in a Zip lock baggie.  She then smashed them to pieces.

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 019

I stuck a little green paint inside and she shook like crazy.  **Side note – sticking out her lower jaw like she is here is one of her favorite things to do these days…not sure why, it looks painful to me!

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 021

Then she squeezed glue all around a green sheet of paper.

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 023

Last, she sprinkled her colored egg shells on top of her glue.  Surprisingly, she wasn’t a big fan of having the painted egg shells stuck to her fingers.

Fox in Socks

We started by putting on some silly socks and reading Fox in Socks.  She chose to wear one Cat in the Hat sock and one One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish sock.

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 013

Then we worked her Fox in Socks puzzle wearing silly socks.

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 014

We even played a matching game with some socks.  I took socks apart and she matched up the pair.  She got frustrated when I tried to show her how to put the pairs of socks together, so we finally just stacked them.

Green Eggs and Fox in Socks 017

Then she decided that she needed to put on all of her silly socks at one time and play with her babies.  Eventually the socks found their way to her hands and were used briefly as puppets!  She ended up wearing her silly socks for quite some time during the day!

Stay tuned for some more Dr. Seuss fun during the next two weeks!
