February Sensory Tub, Snow and More!

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

For February I chose to do a red themed sensory tub.  It has lots of heart goodies in it, so it also doubles as a Valentine’s tub!  Mikayla loves to pull out the little heart shaped games and shake until her heart is content!  She is also a fan of stirring the items with the large rose.  Check it out.

This is just a sampling of the items in the tub.  Obviously there are more of each item shown.  From top left and around clockwise you have foil heart garland, silicone heart shaped baking cups, heart maze game, heart bracelets, red roses that smell like flowers, red foil/filler pieces, red beads (leftover from our Christmas tree) and a large red rose given to me from Ben when we were in high school.

She couldn’t hardly keep her hands out long enough for me to take a picture!

Stay tuned for our march tub, the theme is green (in honor of St. Patrick’s day and the hopes of Spring)!

On February 2, we also had a little groundhogs celebration.  I found a cute little cupcake here.  I thought it might be fun to make at school with my kiddos.  They had such a blast I brought the supplies home to let Mikayla join in on the action.  Thanks to the kindergarten classes, we also got a cute little groundhog headband.  We ended the evening playing a groundhog game on Starfall.

I promise the ones I made at school looked cuter!  Between Mikayla and Ben helping out, ours at home got a little messy!

We have had a ton of snow here in BG this winter!  I am loving it, besides having to drive home in it!  We got so much yesterday that school dismissed early and we had another snow day today.  That hardly ever happens for us!  Mikayla has become quite the little snow bunny.  When she hears the word snow or sees the white stuff in the sky she immediately  grabs her snowsuit and boots and demands to be taken outside.  The other day Ben told her it was supposed to snow before it actually started.  In typical Mikayla fashion she ran and grabbed her snowsuit and boots and demanded they be put on.  When she was all bundled up he took her outside and she was a little disappointed to find that there was no snow on the ground.  Needless to say she was a little happier the next morning when there was snow to play with.  She even cried yesterday when we told her it was time to come inside.

Notice her gloves.  Somewhere in the along the way we have lost the second mitten that goes with her snow suit, so we have to double up on gloves/mittens on her second hand.

January Sensory Tub – White

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

I have decided for my next few sensory tubs we are gong to focus on colors.  For January, since we typically think snow for this season, I opted to go with the theme of white.  I included some of the same items from the December tub because she liked them so much.

In the tub we have small buckets to scoop with, Styrofoam balls of various sizes, soap roses that smell like vanilla, cotton balls, satin ribbon and a duster.

So far Mikayla is most in love with scooping things in the buckets and tearing apart the roses!

For February, we will focus on the color red and also incorporate a few Valentine items.

Christmas Sensory Tub

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Mikayla loved her fall sensory tub so much, I decided to put together a Christmas/winter tub.  I added in some scoops for her to use this time as well!  Here is the completed tub.  I hope she has as much fun with this as she did the fall one!

November 049

Here are some close ups of what I included this time:

November 045 Cotton balls (for snow) and scoops

November 046 Candles that "light up" and textured snowflakes.  Turns out Mikayla is not a fan of the scratchy texture!

November 047Tinsel garland and jingle bell bracelets

November 048   Tiny clay ornaments

Any suggestions for a January tub?

Sensory Tub

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

I have been wanting for some time now to put together a sensory tub for Mikayla.  A blog I follow, Counting Coconuts, makes a different tub for her three year old every couple of weeks.  I am blown away with her creativity and thought I would try my hand at it.  I love the idea of giving kids toys that stimulate creativity, sensory integration, and are made from common household items.

When she was younger I tried my hand at a few simple toys like a water table and a fine motor toy where she stuck chopsticks in holes.  You can read about them here.  Then a few weeks ago I made playdough.  I thought a fall sensory tub would be the next best project!  I had plenty of items lying around the house from my scarecrow costume and picked up a few last minute additions at the store today.  It is simple and (hopefully) fun!

Fall Sensory Tub

Fall colored flowers and berries (all fake so they will last longer).

Fall leaves (some real and some fake) and pine cones.

Bandana scraps tied together to make ball things, ribbon, and rope.

Wooden spoons and tongs for picking up and exploring items.  Piece of burlap sack, pumpkins (real and fake) and a straw brush made from raffia tied together.

When Mikayla wakes up from her nap she will get to explore the tub.  I will try and post pictures later!
