Mikayla’s 3rd Birthday

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Saturday was Mikayla’s third birthday and in honor of the big day we spent time doing things she loves.  Like eating donuts, opening presents and going to the "park and play".  She still has a few more gifts to open, but we are saving those for her big (and by big I mean little) Mickey Mouse Clubhouse birthday celebration this coming Saturday.  Here are some snapshots we got from our day of celebrating!

Letter K and birthday countdown 031

Mikayla woke up to find her floor filled with balloons and "streamers" on her door.  We looked all over for streamers and couldn’t find any so I glued some newspapers together and cut them into strips.  Not quite a festive as colored streamers, but she loved them anyway!

Letter K and birthday countdown 034

Then we made donuts and of course we had to put sprinkles.  I used this recipe for the  donuts and they were delicious!  Best the day they were made and well worth the effort it required!

Letter K and birthday countdown 045

Then she got down to opening her presents.  The first is from us and was a toolbox filled with art supplies.  She loves "crafting" things and so this was a hit.

3rd birthday 002

She also opened gifts from her aunts and uncles.  Here you can see her playing with her Candy Land game (thanks Aunt Chelsea and Uncle Tim) in her rocking new Toms (thanks Aunt Christa, Aunt Sarah, Uncle Christopher, Uncle Kris, Tyson, Tanner and Taylor).  There were other games and craft items included in these gifts, but I didn’t get pictures of them all.

Third birthday celebration 003

After our donut breakfast and packages we hit up a park about thirty minutes down the road.  She ran and played and had a great time.  After some time at the park we went and grabbed lunch.  While at lunch Mikayla met an older couple (with a granddaughter her age) who she proudly told it was her birthday.  They then called in the owner and told him to go to the store and buy her a birthday cake…which he did!  They ended up inviting us to their house for coffee afterwards.  They had a ton of geese, rabbits, chickens, and dogs that Mikayla got to interact with.  She had so much fun.

Third birthday celebration 012

After the park and animals we headed home for a dinner of cheeseburgers and french fries and of course some Funfetti cake!

Third birthday celebration 016

Daddy continued the cake smashing tradition him and our friend Rod always had, but this year Mikayla took the brunt of it.

Third birthday celebration 019

She didn’t seem to mind though, and I helped her to get him back!

We had a great day celebrating with her and she will now proudly tell anyone who listens that she is three!

A Birthday Countdown Tradition

Saturday, April 28th, 2012

When we first had Mikayla I knew that I wanted to start some sort of tradition surrounding her birthday to make it extra special.  The first two birthdays we did countdown days based on the year she was turning.  Each day she would get a small present or activity to do as a family.  For her first day we did a one day countdown to her birthday and her second birthday a two day countdown.  In theory this year we would have done a three day countdown to her birthday.  But then I got to thinking about future birthdays, when she turned ten we would need to do a ten day countdown and at 18 an 18 day countdown…that seemed a bit daunting!  So, this year I instituted a five day countdown for her birthday and will hopefully continue this in years to come.  Each day she got to open a small "gift" or as she called them "prizes" (that is how she has been saying surprises as of late).  I think she really enjoyed each one, plus it helped her to get really excited about her birthday!  Here are what we did for each day of the countdown.

5 – She got a small notebook and several pages of stickers.  She loves to stick stickers inside a notebook so this was a hit.  Unfortunately, she used most of her stickers that day!

4 – Popcorn and movie night.  Ben said up a projector to project the movie on our living room wall.  We popped a big bowl of popcorn and let her go to town!  She thought it was really neat watching a movie that big and sat really nicely for the whole thing.  I think she might be ready for a real theater experience!

3 – Campfire complete with roasting marshmallows and hotdogs.  Sister Diane walked over during this "event" and Mikayla told her all about what was happening!

Letter K and birthday countdown 014

In her bag I put a felt hot dog, a marshmallow and fire made with pipe cleaners.  Here she is "starting a fire" with her pipe cleaner fire.

2 – Felt finger puppets.  I whipped these out during her nap one day.  She hasn’t quite figured out what to do with them and how to put them on, but she plays with them like they are stuffed animals or babies!

Letter K and birthday countdown 033

1- Mickey Mouse dress up kit made from a little felt and some hot glue!  This one was placed in a special purse made from our friend Dacia back home.  She is loving some Mickey Mouse lately and so I thought this would be perfect and it was a HIT as was the purse!  Now when she watched Mickey Mouse Clubhouse she wants to put on her Mickey outfit.  So cute!  I wonder if she will want to wear it to her Mickey birthday party next week?

We did lots of fun things on her actual birthday, more to come soon when I am not so tired!

This Week’s Happenings 2/22-3/3

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

Fair warning, this is going to be a rather long post because we have some catching up to do!  The last two weeks have been filled with traveling, meetings and parties!  Fun times.  When we last left you we were staying with Ben in Matsapha while he was at a week long strategic planning meeting.

Check out last week’s happenings for the full update, but in addition to all that we Mikayla and I got our first African hair cut.  For the most part things turned out okay (a little uneven and more layers than I was expecting), better than expected really.  Mikayla did great.  She let them wash her hair in the big sink while I was getting mine cut and then sat there so still while hers was being trimmed.  The nicest thing about the cut is that it is shorter which makes it cooler, but also it looks decent without being fixed.  Since it gets hot pretty early in the day, most days I don’t feel like blow drying my hair.  So a cut that can go decently without a dryer is always a plus in my book!  (You can see pictures below)

On Thursday (2/23), Mikayla and I headed back to the house early to do some laundry and repacking.  Then on Friday we packed up the car (again) and headed for a mini-vacation/birthday retreat in St. Lucia, South Africa (not the Caribbean St. Lucia).  It was the perfect weekend getaway filled with beaches, animals and relaxation!  On Friday we just checked out the town, took naps and then went out for an excellent dinner at an Italian place called Alfredo’s.  The sisters treated us for my birthday gift.  Thanks again Sister Diane and Sister Barbara!

On Saturday, we dressed in our swim suits, packed a light lunch and headed to Cape Vidal (a beach).  The fun thing about the drive to the beach is that you had to drive through iSimangaliso Wetland Park.  We weren’t expecting to see many animals beyond birds, but ended up seeing quite a few.  Rhinos, hippos, zebra, lot of antelope creatures just to name a few.  It was a nice unexpected addition to the trip.  And the beach was perfect.  The park limits the number of vehicles allowed in to 120 at a time, so it wasn’t overly crowded and not commercialized at all…our kind of beach.  And we even found a little cove with water that was less than two feet for Mikayla to splash around in.  She loved riding the waves, but I think she enjoyed herself more in the little cove.  And despite being sick (she had caught a little cold from her friend the previous week), she had blast!  We headed back to the cottage we were staying in early afternoon for naps and found that Ben and I were sufficiently burned despite putting on 50 SPF sunscreen.  I guess that is what happens when you are spraying on sunscreen on the windy beach!

These guys were everywhere.  Almost like squirrels are in KY.  Mikayla loved watching them run around.

These guys were actually out of the water when we got to this watering hole, but as soon as we drove up they hit the water.  This was the best shot I could get.

Speaking of our cottage, just wanted to put in a word for "The Wilds" where we stayed all weekend.  It was a self-catering place that was perfect.  They had a nice pool and play area (clubhouse, slide, etc.) for Mikayla.  The owners were friendly and helpful in our decisions on where to go and what to eat.  And the best part, unlike most self-catering places, they came in and cleaned each morning including dishes.  Perfect!  So we could cook if we wanted, but not worry about doing the dishes.  Love it!

St Lucia 2 011 - 2

This picture quality is horrible, but here is her monkey friend in the clubhouse!  This was before she noticed him.

Because of the sunburns we decided to just hang out around the cottage on Sunday.  We spent the morning playing in the pool and clubhouse.  Mikayla even had a play date with some monkeys in the clubhouse!  We ventured out for lunch at a little place that overlooked the estuary and were able to watch birds and hippos while eating our tasty meal.  That evening we headed back to the estuary and walked around the beach and lake.  Again saw some hippo heads and Mikayla even found her first few seashells.  I was a little disappointed with the lack of birds we saw, but to the birds credit we didn’t really go seeking them out either.  Maybe on our next trip!

On Monday we packed up and headed home.  We had a little bit of minor car trouble, but nothing that prevented us from making a timely return.

Tuesday of course was my birthday so I laid low all day and besides laundry didn’t do much of anything.  It was a perfect way to spend the day!  Ben was even able to take off part of the day to make me a Funfetti cake!  We had bought the cake mix in SA over Christmas and Joe brought in the Rainbow chip icing when he came in January.  That evening the Sisters cooked a delicious meal of ham steaks (a rarity that they brought back from SA), noodles with a phenomenal gravy and salad.  I ate more than my fair share and after my cake I was stuffed!  I also got ot open my birthday gift from my parents and Ben – A combination blender and food processor!  We used it to make hummus on the very first day.  Love it!

The rest of the week Mikayla and I caught up on housework and play time while Ben finished last minute work stuff before his big trip to the US (he leaves on Monday for three weeks).  On Friday we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday by having a special birthday dinner.  Can anyone guess what we had?  Shame on you who didn’t guess green eggs and ham!  Actually that isn’t quite true.  Since ham is hard to get here, we had greens eggs and bacon.  We also hat Cat in the Hat Pancake Stacks (banana pancakes for the white and pancakes made with strawberry Jell-O for the red), Cat in the Hat banana / fruit strip circles and Pink Yink Ink Drink from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish (Sprite mixed with strawberry Jell-O powder).  Last year Mikayla wasn’t much on this meal, but this year she ate it all up!  And throughout the meal she kept quoting Dr. Seuss stories.  I love that my daughter loves Dr. Seuss as much as I do!  We loaned out our books and Horton Movie to the hostel so they could use them, so we didn’t actually read any books on Friday.  But the next couple of weeks I have a ton of activities planned for our learning time!

Dr. Seuss dinner 008

Since Ben leaves on Monday we are laying low this weekend as a family.  And in case you hadn’t heard there is a tropical cyclone (Irina) that is set to hit the coast of Mozambique this weekend which could make things interesting around here.  We will keep you posted, but there is a good chance we will be without power and phone service for the next few days.

A Candy Themed Party

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

When Mikayla turned one I knew I wanted to throw a cupcake themed party.  We did and it was fun!  This year I was wavering between a Dr. Seuss birthday party and a Candy Themed birthday party.  When I gave Ben the options he immediately decided it had to be candy!  So candy it was…lots and lots of candy!

All I have to say is:  Candy + Lots of friends and family (minus some really special ones who couldn’t make it) + a very special little girl = the best 2 year old birthday party ever!  Thanks everyone for making it such fun.  I hope we didn’t have too many upset tummies last night!  Here are some picture highlights of the day.

Happy 2nd Birthday Mikayla

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

MLK birthday, hair clips 003 Easter, birthday 028

Mikayla last year on her birthday and then this year (very excited with crazy bed head!).

I had planned to write a lengthy post of all the accomplishments Mikayla has made in the last year, but to be honest I am too tired tonight.  Maybe another night.  For tonight I just want to wish the sweetest two year old a very happy birthday!  We had a great day of donuts, bubble baths, visitors, a park date, Chick-fil-a and of course rounded out the day with a little Stakz frozen yogurt!  Mikayla even woke up to a birthday decorated doorway.

Easter, birthday 031

Posing in front of her birthday sign before our donut date!

Just hanging around the park like two year olds do!

Happy birthday sweet baby!  I am sad you are growing up so fast, but can’t wait to see what the next year holds for you.

Chattanooga Birthday Trip

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

For Mikayla’s 2nd birthday we opted to take a non-traditional route.  Since we will be moving in July and can’t take very much with us we decided to give her a trip somewhere instead of a birthday gift to unwrap (thanks Lara for the idea).  My spring break is this week so we had the perfect opportunity.  On Monday, we packed the car and headed to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the evening.

Our first stop was the zoo.  It wasn’t a very big zoo, but we had a blast anyway.  Mikayla loved looking at the monkeys (really chimps, but she doesn’t know any better).  At one point one of them was walking right by our viewing window and got either excited or scared.  It let out a screech sound banged the window a few times while showing its teeth and then ran off.  Mikayla was a little taken back until she realized the monkey was just saying hi!  When it happened she actually threw her hands up and said "Whoa"!  It was priceless.

And of course we had to go swimming so, as Mikayla called it, "put my head under water"!  Doesn’t she look so grown up in this swim suit?

On Tuesday morning we got up and headed to the Creative Discovery Museum.  We have taken Mikayla to several children’s museums, but this one was a hit for sure.  It catered very well to toddler aged children where others are geared towards older kids.  Mikayla loved the water station the best and kept asking to go back.

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

I had just finished my last paper for my master’s class and decided to relax for the rest of the evening.  My maternity leave had just started, but Mikayla was still in my big belly.

week 39 005 Thirty-nine weeks pregnant and still growing!

A year ago, Ben and I decided to head into town for some snacks.  Much to my dismay Taco Bell was out of refried beans.  How does a “Mexican” restaurant run out of refried beans?  Never mind, that is a different rant.

A year ago, we were a family of two plus Shiloh that was about to become a family of three.

A year ago, I was a breast pump virgin.  Now, after many days of making bottles for my daughter I am no longer a breast pump virgin.  For the last 10 months (I didn’t pump much the first two months), I have use my handy breast pump to supply milk for my daughter at least once a day.  It has been an up and down battle, but we made it!

A year ago, these were Tim’s thoughts on what was happening in our lives.

A year ago, this is how I looked laying in a hospital bed anxiously awaiting the arrival of Baby Kickert.

A year ago, I first held Mikayla in my arms and experienced a bond like no other.  I nursed my daughter for the first time and cried as my husband sang her lullabies beside me.

Pathetic

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Over the weekend I turned 27.  I wouldn’t consider myself old by any means, just older!  Ben so kindly made me a cake complete with 27 candles…so creative.

Unfortunately, I was unable to blow out 27 candles in one fail swoop.  Pathetic.  Judge for yourself!
