{"id":572,"date":"2009-08-24T22:11:19","date_gmt":"2009-08-25T03:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kickert.info\/blog\/?p=572"},"modified":"2009-11-03T07:53:15","modified_gmt":"2009-11-03T13:53:15","slug":"macbook-pro-blank-screen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kickert.info\/blog\/2009\/08\/24\/macbook-pro-blank-screen\/","title":{"rendered":"Fixing the Blank Screen on my Macbook Pro &#8211; Deleting the sleepimage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the midst of a super-busy week I experiencing a heart-sinking feeling: I opened the lid to my macbook pro and all I got was a blank screen.\u00a0 Earlier in the day I had closed my computer to take it with me to meeting.\u00a0 Every other time it simply went to sleep and then &#8220;woke up&#8221; when I opened the lid.\u00a0 If I had left it unplugged for a while it would take a bit to start up, but this time I got nothing.\u00a0 I tried charging it, but then when I tried starting it, I would get the start up sound, but then just a black screen staring at me.\u00a0 It would accept some start up commands (like <a href=\"http:\/\/support.apple.com\/kb\/HT1379\">zapping the PRAM<\/a>), but beyond that it was dead.\u00a0 I thought it might just be the screen went out, but it was obvious no other functions worked (i.e. volume, keyboard brightness, etc.).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_574\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kickert.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/746px-MacBook_Pro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-574\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-574\" title=\"746px-MacBook_Pro\" src=\"http:\/\/kickert.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/746px-MacBook_Pro-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"Blank Screen on a MacBook Pro (obviously not mine).\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kickert.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/746px-MacBook_Pro-300x241.jpg 300w, http:\/\/kickert.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/746px-MacBook_Pro.jpg 746w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-574\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blank Screen on a MacBook Pro (obviously not mine).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After trying everything I could think of, I finally found a message board that suggested it could be a corrupted sleep image.\u00a0 After deleting the corrupted file, I was able to get things running.\u00a0 It was such a frustrating and nerve-wracking experience, I figure I could go through the steps I took and hopefully save someone else some grief if encounter a similar problem.\u00a0 Here is what I did to fix my problem.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start your macbook (pro) in <a href=\"http:\/\/support.apple.com\/kb\/HT1661\">target disk mode<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Connect your computer another mac via firewire.<\/li>\n<li>Start up the working mac and then press the power button on the mac that is not working<\/li>\n<li>While it is starting, hold down the &#8220;T&#8221; key.<\/li>\n<li>Your mac should show up as an external hard drive in the finder of the other mac<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Delete the Sleep Image\n<ul>\n<li>Open Finder in the working computer<\/li>\n<li>Press CMD+Shift+G<\/li>\n<li>Enter &#8220;\/volumes\/<em>Your Computer<\/em>\/private\/var\/vm\/&#8221; where &#8220;Your Computer&#8221; equals the name of the broken mac as seen in Finder.<\/li>\n<li>Delete the &#8220;Sleepimage&#8221; file\n<ul>\n<li>I also deleted the &#8220;swapfile0&#8221; file which was there, but I am not sure if this is necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Empty the Trash<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Delete the Extension files\n<ul>\n<li>Navigate to the \/System\/Library folder on the broken mac<\/li>\n<li>Delete the &#8220;Extensions.mkext&#8221; file\n<ul>\n<li>I also deleted the &#8220;Extensions.kextcache&#8221; file which was there, but I am not sure if this is necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Empty the Trash<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Eject the broken mac just like you do a regular external hard drive.<\/li>\n<li>Press the power button on your mac if it is still running and remove the firewire cable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If everything goes like it should, your macbook (pro) should work like normal.\u00a0 I immediately backed up all my important files and disabled sleep mode via the preferences pane.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: The first time I tried this I followed the directions found <a href=\"http:\/\/ariejan.net\/2009\/04\/05\/macbook-pro-black-screen-of-death-or-is-it-just-faking\/\">here<\/a>, but it did not work.\u00a0 I tried it again and deleted the additional files noted above and emptied the trash can and everything worked that time around.
