{"id":1228,"date":"2010-05-20T22:23:25","date_gmt":"2010-05-21T03:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kickert.info\/blog\/?p=1228"},"modified":"2010-05-20T22:29:12","modified_gmt":"2010-05-21T03:29:12","slug":"5000-barrels-a-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kickert.info\/blog\/2010\/05\/20\/5000-barrels-a-day\/","title":{"rendered":"5000 Barrels a Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By now everyone knows about the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deepwater_Horizon_oil_spill\">environmental\u00a0catastrophe<\/a> unfolding in the gulf coast. \u00a0Initial estimates of 1000 barrels a day were horrendous enough and soon upgraded to an estimate of 5000 barrels. \u00a0However a few weeks ago, new footage emerged showing the actual leak:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New Underwater footage of BP oil leak\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kZoOJga5wbc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This lead to researchers to conclude the leak could actually be as high as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=126809525\">80,000+ barrels a day<\/a>. \u00a0That means that every 3-4 days as much oil as the entire <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exxon_Valdez\">Exxon Valdez<\/a> spilled is leaking into our oceans. \u00a0Just\u00a0yesterday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/2010\/05\/19\/94467\/engineer-oil-spill-videos-show.html\">experts testified before congress<\/a> that the actually amount is most likely close to 95K barrels per day.<\/p>\n<p>What really chaps me is that BP is refusing to acknowledge\u00a0the extent of the flow (and thus the extent of the damage). \u00a0They are sticking by their early figures of 5K despite the fact they are woefully\u00a0inaccurate\u00a0and they are <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/world\/us_and_canada\/10134881.stm\">refusing to put forth the effort to actually figure out the flow rate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After many unsuccessful attempts to address the problem, BP finally was able to insert a tube into the broken pipe to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSN1620781020100516\">siphon off the oil<\/a>. \u00a0They claim they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/bp-says-siphon-now-capturing-5000-barrels-a-day-2010-05-20\">now capturing up to 5,000 barrels of leaking oil<\/a>. \u00a0That just happens to be the magic number &#8212; the amount BP still claims is all that is leaking.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, the leak is still flowing. \u00a0Check out this footage:<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4h4yHPt7ejs<\/p>\n<p>This has been going on for a month. \u00a0Even when we aren&#8217;t thinking about it, or the news media isn&#8217;t covering it, thousands and thousands of gallons of toxic crude oil are blasting into our oceans. \u00a0It literally makes me sick to think about the towns in Alabama that survived Hurricane Katrina, only to be (irreparably?) damaged by this man-made disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Now who thinks &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/04\/29\/drill-baby-drill-champion_n_558014.html\">Drill Baby Drill<\/a>&#8221;
