{"id":465,"date":"2009-12-12T16:18:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-12T22:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kickert.info\/beth\/2009\/12\/12\/making-your-own-baby-food\/"},"modified":"2009-12-12T16:20:20","modified_gmt":"2009-12-12T22:20:20","slug":"making-your-own-baby-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kickert.info\/beth\/2009\/12\/12\/making-your-own-baby-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Your Own Baby Food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have been very intentional with the way we have been raising Mikayla.\u00a0 We have tried to buy as little new stuff as possible\u00a0 and recycle old stuff instead (in other words we have made or borrowed as much stuff as possible).\u00a0 Part of this is because we are what some people would refer to as \u201ccheap\u201d, but most of it is we saw how quickly children cycle through toys and clothes, leaving them in excellent condition when they were through.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t justify buying brand new stuff when we could borrow from family and friends items that were gently used.<\/p>\n<p>We have also been using cloth diapers since Mikayla was around 1-2 months old.\u00a0 Despite the fact that they are super cute and cheaper than disposables in the long run, they are much easier on the environment than disposables.\u00a0 I have loved every minute of it!<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of \u201cgreen\u201d things, when we found out we were pregnant we decided that we would make our own baby food.\u00a0 Call us crazy, but we knew we could make it work.\u00a0 It began as a money saver, and has now turned into much more.\u00a0 We make our own food because we feel it is healthier for our daughter.\u00a0 Making your own baby food is easy as 1-2-3 (and maybe 4).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Wash, peel and chop vegetables (omit this step if you are using frozen veggies).<\/li>\n<li>Place in steamer basket (we have on that fits in our saucepan) and steam until soft (can easily break with a spoon).<\/li>\n<li>Place steamed veggies in food processor and puree until desired consistency (pretty runny at first).\u00a0 If too thick then add leftover water from saucepan in processor.<\/li>\n<li>Place pureed food in ice cube trays, cover and freeze until hardened.\u00a0 Once frozen transfer to ziplock bags, label and store in freezer.\u00a0 Frozen baby food can be stored for up to 8 weeks.\u00a0 We mix and match our food as needed, pulling out a cube or two from several bags for each feeding.\u00a0 **Don\u2019t forget the all important rule of introducing only one new food at a time for a couple of feedings to determine allergies.**<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When I first began making my own baby food I searched the internet high and low for advice, recipes and tips, and of course talked to some friends who were doing the same.\u00a0 Here are some helpful websites and books I have found.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Annabel Karmel has some great books with high quality recipes and detailed instructions.\u00a0 She also has a pretty good <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annabelkarmel.com\/\">website<\/a> and books for recipes when cooking for toddlers.\u00a0 She has some great ideas!<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.wholesomebabyfood.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wholesomebabyfood.com\/\">http:\/\/www.wholesomebabyfood.com\/<\/a> This website is filled with recipes and valuable information when making your own baby food.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.babycenter.com\/0_how-to-make-your-own-baby-food_1401482.bc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.babycenter.com\/0_how-to-make-your-own-baby-food_1401482.bc\">http:\/\/www.babycenter.com\/0_how-to-make-your-own-baby-food_1401482.bc<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.umext.maine.edu\/onlinepubs\/htmpubs\/4309.htm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.umext.maine.edu\/onlinepubs\/htmpubs\/4309.htm\">http:\/\/www.umext.maine.edu\/onlinepubs\/htmpubs\/4309.htm<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.chow.com\/stories\/11562\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chow.com\/stories\/11562\">http:\/\/www.chow.com\/stories\/11562<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/homecooking.about.com\/od\/specificfood\/a\/babyfooddos.htm\" href=\"http:\/\/homecooking.about.com\/od\/specificfood\/a\/babyfooddos.htm\">http:\/\/homecooking.about.com\/od\/specificfood\/a\/babyfooddos.htm<\/a> (quick bulleted list of do\u2019s and don\u2019ts)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Mikayla even seems to think it tastes pretty good!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kickert.info\/beth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/20091205Thanksgivingtreebacon005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px;
